Local children get creative with ideas to improve local villages

Children from three local villages: Cauldon Lowe, Alton and Kingsley Holt, entered into an exciting poster design competition that was part of the Staffordshire Moorlands Best Kept Village competition.  Entrants were asked to design a poster to give ideas on how to improve local villages, with six winners chosen from each age category: 5-7 years, 8-11 years, with first, second and third place awarded. Congratulations go to all the finalists, but particularly Ruby Goodwin from Kingsley Holt and Tom Stone from Cauldon Lowe, who were the winners of the 5-7 years and 8-11 years groups respectively.  The results were revealed at a special celebration event held at Acton Trussell Community Centre recently. Judges for this year’s poster competition were Michelle Simpson, Martin Bains and Sue Harrison from Lafarge Cauldon. Prizes for the winners were a £20 book voucher for first place, £15 book voucher for second place and £10 voucher for third place from Lafarge Cauldon.

Ignacio Mirasol, Plant Manager at Lafarge Cauldon, which sponsors the event, was proud to present the prizes. He said: “I would like to congratulate all the children who took part in this competition. It really was fantastic to see some of their creative ideas about how we can keep our local villages clean and tidy.  All the finalists did brilliantly and it was great to be able to present these worthy winners with their prizes.”

The posters will be displayed in various locations around Cauldon Lowe and Kingsley Holt that were finalists in the Best Kept (small) Village competition. Lafarge Cauldon has sponsored the Best Kept Village competition for Staffordshire Moorlands for a number of years, which saw Cauldon Lowe receive the trophy as this year’s winner.

John Perry, MBE, Chairman of the Best Kept Village Working Group said: “All villages that took part this year, including those which didn’t win a major award, put in a great deal of hard work to maintain or improve the environment of their villages. The Best Kept Village Working Group were very pleased with this year’s Children’s and Young People’s competitions and we look forward to running these competitions in the future.”
