Richard Whiting, Practical Projects Officer for CVLLP has been running a regular workparty. In recent weeks they have been hedgelaying on the Leek Arm of the Caldon canal. In total they have made six visits to the site (including 2 workparties from the Inland Waterways Association) and have laid and gap planted over 150m of hedge line. This project aims to improve the hedgeline along the entire Caldon Canal within the CVLLP area. Hedge management will continue over the following 3 winters and also includes planting, fencing and trimming.
A well maintained hedgeline provides a stockproof barrier and wind break;but also provides nesting habitat for birds and acts as a 'Wildlife Corridor'.
Regular Wednesday workparties are led by Richard, details of which are on the Churnet Valley Calender. Volunteers will be helping with projects as required by CVLLP partner organisations, eg Canal & River Trust.
Typically the sessions run from 10- 3/3.30ish. Participants are generally required to get to the site themselves but upto 4 lifts can accommodated from the Leek Workshop at 9.30.
