All are welcome – members or not –for a special illustrated presentation that will feature the canals through the heart of the Churnet Valley:

Waterway Recovery Group (WRG “werg”) is the topic - 50+ years of its history, current projects and future aspirations. No doubt their volunteer work on the Uttoxeter Canal at Froghall and at locations down the Churnet Valley to Crumpwood Weir will get a mention, and maybe the restoration of the Caldon Canal back in the 1970s which many “Navvies” volunteered on.

Whether cruising our inland waterways or using them for walking, cycling or fishing, we owe many miles of the network we enjoy today to the pioneering efforts of WRG’s volunteers. WRG continues its work to bring waterways back into navigation and to preserve historic infrastructure. Locally, a WRG canal camp recently laid the first section of the Burslem Port “Footsteps” project’s footpath, they have worked on Cheshire Locks and WRG camps have been welcomed to the Caldon and Uttoxeter Canals on many occasions.Speaker Helen has been a member of the WRG Board for about 12 years and was involved in canal restoration from an early age, attending her first WRG Canal Camp at just 16. . She will have plenty of good stories from her own experiences as well as the WRG archives to share!
