Monteverdi Vespers comes to Leek

Venue:
All Saints' Church, Leek

The Phoenix Singers, a community choir based in Leek, are again bringing The Leek Arts Festival to a close with a concert at All Saints' Church, Leek in which they will perform The Monteverdi Vesper of 1610. This work brings together the choir, soloists and an orchestra, many performing on ealy music instruments. This work, last performed in Leek by The Phoenix Singers in 1994, is regarded as one of the greatest works of sacred music ever written. Thrilling settings of psalms for multi-part choir and instrumentalists are combined with beautiful settings of texts from the "Song of Songs" for soloists. A joyous piece that brings again the glorious music heard in Venice of the 17th century to the Staffordshire Moorlands.
